CLINTON, Md. (AP/WJLA) - A young Marine was killed in a hit-and-run early Saturday.
Police say 27-year-old Eric Derron Bridgett, of Clinton, was trying to cross Kirby Road around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when a passing vehicle struck him and drove off.
Police say Bridgett, who was found lying on the side of the road and was pronounced dead at the scene, was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.
"It's just not fair for him to die on the road like that by himself," says Claudia Bridgett, his mother.
Bridgett was also a husband and father of three who had served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.
"It's really, really cruel," his mother says. "If they hadn't left him alone maybe he would have had a chance."
"How [are] you going to hit somebody and keep going?" asks Maurice Reynolds. "That's somebody's life you're taking. That's pretty sad."
"Come to find out he was somebody who went to war for us so I hope he does get justice," says Julian Crawford.
Bridgett's mother said he had been home for about a year and was trying to get his life back on track.
"He suffered from that PTSD," his mother says. "He was on a waiting list to get treatment. How fair is that?"
Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
