Elderly woman injured in high-rise fire on Good Hope Road in SE

A fire in a high-rise apartment complex in Southeast has left one injured and fighting for her life.

About 8:30 p.m., the fire started in the basement of Marbury Plaza, an apartment building located in the 2300 block of Good Hope Road.

Flames quickly climbed to the second floor.

"I heard everybody screaming and running," said Leah Jeter, a resident. "By the time we went in the hallway it was just packed with smoke."

The smoke sent an elderly woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A child also went to the hospital, just as a precaution.

Within an hour, crews were able to get the fire under control.

"It was the scariest thing I've seen since I've been here," said resident Jerome Coleman. "So many hazmat trucks, fire crews, and police and they've got the whole area cordoned off."
