Spotsylvania man Edward Vincent Zottoli was charged with indecent liberties with a child while in a custodial role, as well as a charge of forcible sodomy.
Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said that the charges were filed against Zottoli as a result of an investigation when the juvenile's parents contacted the Sheriff's Office. A 14 year-old male who had been befriended by Zottoli, 61, who was referred to as "Brother Ed," at their church, disclosed that he had been sexually assaulted by the man.
During the investigation, the juvenile disclosed that he and his brother spent the night at Zottoli's residence on Short Circle earlier in the week. Zottoli asked the juvenile to sleep in his bed with him while Zottoli was nude in the bed, the Sheriff's Office said. Zottoli then asked the juvenile for a massage and then sexually assaulted him on two occasions and requested the juvenile perform acts upon him, the office said.
Zottoli was interviewed by Detective DeMoranville and Spotsylvania Social Worker Regina Johnson as part of the Child Abuse Response Team where he made admissions that were aligned with the juvenile's statements.
Zottoli had contact with this juvenile and others when he was "counseling" them and purchased items for them. Zottli lived by himself and admitted to other offenses years ago in another country while he was serving in the armed forces.
