HANOVER, Md. (WJLA) - A North Carolina man has been charged with vulnerable adult neglect after allegedly leaving his 98-year-old mother alone inside a car parked at Maryland Live! Casino for nearly five hours.
The suspect, 67-year-old Dwight McGinnis, of Raleigh, N.C., entered the Anne Arundel County casino parking area just after 1:40 p.m. Monday. His wheelchair-bound mother remained in the vehicle with the window partially open until just before 6:30 p.m., when police arrived after receiving a tip from a concerned passerby.
The victim was initially confused and incoherent but as her conversation with officers continued, she was able to assist them in locating her son. She was also evaluated by emergency medical personnel and deemed not to be in medical distress.
McGinnis didn't leave the casino until 6:17 p.m., Anne Arundel County Police said, and didn't return to the car until 7:25 p.m., after being contacted on his cell phone by police. He was arrested upon returning to the vehicle and charged with vulnerable adult neglect.
Passers-by said they were shocked that someone would do such a thing to an elderly mother.
"The guy who did that must have some problems," said Mt. Airy resident Dorothy Hughes.
"You don't leave someone - a 90-year-old individual - in the car. It's not acceptable," said another.
McGinnis was also served with an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for a suspended license.
