The FBI has launched an investigation into the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board overseeing the construction of the $6 billion Metrorail extension to Dulles Airport, the Washington Examiner reports.

For months, federal investigators have been reviewing multi-million dollar contracts that were awarded by the MWAA to companies that employ friends and relatives of authority officials, the Examiner reports.

The Examiner reports an additional report by an inspector general at the U.S. Department of Transportation is expected to detail the agency’s history of nepotism.

The first phase of what will be known as Metro’s Silver Line is currently under construction and projected to be finished in 2013.

Phase two, the final phase, is expected to begin construction in January.
