The driver of a minivan died after he was hit and killed by a speeding car after a possible street race late Thursday night in Accokeek, Maryland, according to ABC7 News' John Gonzalez.

Police say James Hill, 67, was taken to an area hospital in critical condition where he died.

Friday morning car pieces were strewn across the road at Indian Head Highway and lanes reopened after eight hours due to closures for the accident.

Hill was attempting to turn northbound on Indian Head Highway when his minivan was struck by a Ford traveling southbound.

Police say a third car hit the Ford, and the driver of the Ford sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred on Route 210 and Pine Lane near Indian Head Highway, and three cars including a Camaro were towed away from the scene.

Witnesses told ABC7 News that the cars were racing and speeding and weaving in-and-out of traffic.

Maryland County leaders and residents have lobbied for years to stop illegal street racing on Indian Head Highway.

The scene of this accident is the exact same intersection where eight people were killed back in 2008 during an illegal drag race.
