Douglas MacArthur Elementary student accused of bringing toy gun to school

A 10-year-old boy is facing criminal charges in Alexandria after he allegedly brought a toy gun on a school bus this week.

According to Alexandria Police, on the bus ride home from MacArthur Monday, the 10-year-old boy in the 5th grade started telling kids he had a gun and then showed a fake gun tucked into his waistband.

A child told her mother, who then called and wrote a the school district, starting the investigation.

When the boy got off the bus at school Tuesday morning, he was taken into custody by Alexandria Police, who found the same fake gun in his backpack.

The boy was taken to juvenile intake and charged with brandishing a weapon, a misdemeanor.

He has also been suspended, and the school is considering expulsion.

In light of Newtown, parent Kimberly Krakowski says the mention of any gun near any school is cause for concern.

"Definitely I feel better that it was a toy and not real but with everything going on it's just as scary," she says. "I'm sure the kids who didn't know it was fake were very frightened."

But some parents think what's already happened is enough.

"I definitely think it's not something to brush off but now that it's been discovered as a toy we should move past it," says one parent.
