WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A three-year-old boy's mysterious death earlier this week in Southeast D.C. has been ruled a homicide, with police investigators concluding the child was beaten to death.
The medical examiner has also confirmed that young Xavier Lyles died from multiple blunt force injuries.
Claudia Harris runs a nonprofit center for the neighborhood kids called "Angels of Hope," and says everyone here is on edge.
According to the police report, at about 11 a.m. Tuesday morning, the child's mother called 911, reporting that she couldn't wake the toddler and that he was cold unresponsive.
ABC 7's Sam Ford spoke with his grandparents, who were understandably shaken:
"He's just a baby...I don't know, I don't know, I don't know," repeated the child's grandmother, Tracey Brown.
Lyles' grandparents say he had just spent the weekend with them, and was fine when he left.
The toddler's mother - along with her infant and nine-year-old - was seen leaving with police to answer questions. Now, the community is looking for answers.
