DC's Emancipation Day to thank for extended April 17 tax deadline

This year's tax deadline is Tuesday, April 17 and we have DC's Emancipation Day, when President Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves, to thank for the extra day!

Here's how it works.

The tax deadline is typically April 15, except for when it falls on a weekend or a federal holiday -- D.C. holidays included.

This year it did both.

  • April 15 -- Sunday
  • April 16 -- Monday, Emancipation Day

So the 2018 deadline shifted to Tuesday, April 17 for filing 1040s or an extension.

Last year's deadline had a similar situation, but with three extra days. The reason why? April 15 fell on a Saturday and the following Monday (April 17) was Emancipation Day -- so the 2017 deadline shifted to Tuesday, April 18.

Next year the deadline will go back to April 15.
