D.C. State Board of Ed. Member: 6-year-old hit by car in SE died on his birthday

The six-year-old boy struck by a car in Southeast Wednesday night died on his sixth birthday, according to a D.C. State Board of Education member.

Xavier Luckey was in kindergarten at Hendley Elementary School.

The principal of Hendley Elementary School sent home this letter about Xavier's death:

All of us at Hendley Elementary School were deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students, Xavier Luckey, a kindergartener who died from injuries of a car accident. We the faculty, students, and staff of Hendley wish to extend our deepest sympathy and heart-felt condolences to the families, relatives, many friends and classmates. Xavier was a sensitive boy who had many friends at school. His teachers appreciated the effort he placed upon his schoolwork and his cooperative nature in working with others.
In order to assist our students and staff cope with the great sadness and shock of this tragedy, I requested and obtained needed support and resources of the District of Columbia Public Schools. Today the Crisis Team members from various offices and school locations have assisted us in dealing with our children and staff. We will continue to have resources available to help us through this most difficult time. If you or any family members are upset and need assistance, please call me or our Social Workers, Patty Ansani and Lori Craig at 202-645-3450. If you notice a sudden change in your child's behavior and/or health that is unexplainable to you, please contact us. We will continue to respond to any child who is upset or has problems dealing with this tragedy.
Our school is an important part of this community and we jointly share in the responsibility of the development of our greatest resource -- our children. We thank you for your continued support during this difficult time for Xavier’s family and our school community.

The incident happened in the 4300 block of Livingston Road, SE at around 8:30 p.m.

According to police, the section of the roadway where Xavier was crossing did not have a crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle was interviewed by detectives and an investigation remains ongoing.

No word yet on if any charges will be filed against the driver.
