Two of the most powerful military leaders in America are caught up in a sex scandal that could end both of their careers and land both men in a military prison.
Many American civilians don't understand how, what amounts to an affair, could have such serious consequences for the former CIA director David Petraeus and the man who succeeded him as head of the military campaign in Afghanistan, General John Allen. Petraeus can still face military justice even though he is a retired general.
Lisa Windsor is a retired army colonel and now a defense attorney representing military personnel charged with violating the military code of conduct. She explains why sexual misconduct is so serious especially when committed by high profile, high ranking leaders.
“It's not only that you had sex with somebody that's not your spouse but that this had an effect on good order morale and discipline in the service or of a nature to bring discredit to the service,” she says.
So far, Allen only faces allegations of sending inappropriate emails to Jill Kelley, a woman who calls herself a family friend of Petraeus and his wife Holly. They are allegations he has denied.
Kelley is the one who reportedly broke this scandal open when she told the FBI she was received harassing emails from Paula Broadwell, the woman alleged to have carried on an affair with Petraeus.
