Surveillance video of a person of interest in the July murder of a 61-year-old man in the River Terrace neighborhood of Northeast D.C. has been released by MPD officials.
D.C. police officials are hoping that the video will lead to the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Darryl Sweet, who was found unconscious with a severe head injury on July 26 in the 3800 block of Minnesota Avenue NE. He died a day later.
An autopsy on Sweet, a Southeast D.C. resident, showed that he was murdered by blunt force trauma to the head.
As word got out over Sweet's beating death, residents in the area of Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road described him as a neighborhood fixture who didn't bother anybody.
Sweet, a handyman, went by the nickname of "Painter" and lived with his wife about a block from where he was fatally beaten.
"He was a good guy," D.C. resident Raeford Bush said. "I don't understand this."
An investigation into Sweet's death continues. Anyone with information is asked to call MPD officials at (202) 727-9099.
