D.C. Wal-Mart stores could open by the end of 2013
After a few hiccups in construction, the second of the first two Wal-Mart locations in the District of Columbia could open by the end of 2013, the Washington Post reports.
With construction of the big box retailers first D.C. location already underway on North Capitol Street, officials tell the Post that work on the second one, which will be located on Georgia Avenue in Northwest, should begin in September.
The Wal-Mart that's currently under construction, which will sit a handful of blocks west of Union Station on H Street, will be a part of a mixed-use development with apartments and other retail stores.
The opening of what could end up being six Wal-Mart locations in the District has been met with some vocal resistance, including a rally in Chinatown in June against the retailer from opening stores in the nation's capital.
Other planned locations for stores in D.C. include one on New York Avenue and Bladensburg Road, another near the Prince George's County border on East Capitol Street, a fifth at Skyland Town Center in Southeast and a final one near Fort Totten.
