      D.C. speed cameras heavy on taxpayers' wallets

      For as much revenue as D.C. speed cameras bring the District government, it turns out they also cost a lot to operate.{}

      Cameras brought in $85 million last year, but a new report by WTOP found D.C. paid nearly $53 million for a private contractor to install and maintain the cameras.{}

      An Inspector General's report says the lack of a bidding process is extending the firm's contact, costing taxpayers $9 million in additional fees.{}
