      D.C. schools, libraries closed Friday

Schoolchildren in D.C. don't have school or a library to go to on Friday. They're both closed.

WASHINGTON (AP) District of Columbia public schools are closed Friday for a professional development day.

But the system's 46,000 students won't be able to spend their free time in the district's libraries those are closed too, for staff development.

Library spokesman George Williams tells The Washington Post that the timing is a "coincidence."

He says libraries also closed last year on the first Friday of December and that he hadn't known schools would also be closed.
