WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington-based Tompkins Builders has been chosen to build the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial near the Capitol.
Tompkins has previously worked on the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art, the World War II Memorial, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.
The selection was announced Wednesday.
The new memorial will be near the U.S. Botanic Garden within view of the Capitol. Its centerpiece will be a star-shaped reflecting pool with its surface broken by a single, eternal flame. Glass and granite walls will include text and images. Four bronze sculptures will help tell a story of a veteran's pride of service, trauma, challenge of healing and discovery of purpose.
Supporters held a ceremonial groundbreaking in November. They hope to dedicate the memorial in 2012.
