D.C. police officer wounded, suspect killed in SE

An MPD officer was wounded Wednesday afternoon in Southeast in an incident during which the suspect was fatally shot. The suspect was identified late Wednesday night as Nathaniel McRae, 34, of Northwest, D.C.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of Barnaby Street SE, in the District's Washington Highlands neighborhood.

Police initially said the officer was shot and is conscious and breathing. Later, police said the officer was wounded but it's unclear how the officer was hurt.{ }{ }

The fatal shooting incident began with a carjacking on Joliet Street in SW. The victim flagged down officer and officers found the vehicle shortly after.

Once at Barnaby Street, the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and pulled out a gun, police say. The officers then opened fire and hit the suspect.

The ambulance that was carrying the suspect broke down on 295 with the suspect inside, police sources tell ABC7.

In an separate incident Wednesday, an MPD officer was fired upon in Northeast D.C. Wednesday afternoon. The officer had witnessed a robbery at Anacostia Avenue and Blaine Street and his vehicle was fired upon. The officer returned fire, police say.

The two suspects fled.

Chief Cathy Lanier says Wednesday that this is the first time since she has been chief that she’s seen two police-involved shootings within 45 minutes of each other.
