WASHINGTON (AP) The D.C. Court of Appeals has affirmed the city police chief's power to demote officers at her discretion.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier praised Thursday's decision by the three-judge panel, saying in a statement that it ensures that high-ranking officials in the department "demonstrate the highest level of integrity and judgment."
Two former commanders, including one who led the police division that provided a police escort in April to actor Charlie Sheen, challenged their demotions in court.
Capt. Hilton Burton said earlier this year that he believed his demotion was in response to his June appearance before the D.C. Council, in which he said police escorts were routinely provided for celebrities visiting Washington. The testimony contradicted statements by Lanier.
