D.C. memorials under construction change face of district

With D.C. area memorials masked in scaffolding, the city's taken on a different look lately.

It just seems like the perfect storm of renovations: Clean-up remains at the Lincoln Memorial, the Joseph Henry statue in front of the Smithsonian and the National Cathedral after vandals splattered green paint on them; Work on the Washington Monument and World War II Memorial is well-underway and work just started at the MLK Memorial.

Even White House tours are canceled due to sequestration.

Tourism officials say the repair work hasn't slowed the number of visitors, with D.C. tourism on pace for another record year.

But while some may wonder why they can't get inside - or up close to their favorite landmarks - others realize the flip side may be not enjoying them at all.
