D.C. Council hearing on hate crimes

WASHINGTON (AP) - A District of Columbia Council committee is taking testimony about the police department's response to hate crimes in the city.

Councilman Phil Mendelson, who chairs the public safety committee, has called for Wednesday's hearing. He says he wants to determine whether police are responding effectively to reports of hate crimes.

Among the witnesses scheduled to testify are Police Chief Cathy Lanier and A.J. Singletary, the president of Gays and Lesbians Opposing Violence.

The hearing starts at 10 a.m. at the John A. Wilson Building.
