With the 4th of July celebrations in Washington, D.C. always comes a litany of road closures and heavy pedestrian traffic around the National Mall area.

DDOT is working with MPD officials to keep the public safe during the holiday celebration, and that includes the closure of several roads for the majority of Wednesday. Visitors to the Mall are being encouraged by DDOT, MPD and the National Park Service to take public transportation on Wednesday.

Each line color on the map denotes that it's closed at a specific time:

-Red lines mean the road is closed from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.
-Green lines mean the road is closed from 11:30 a.m. until 11 p.m.
-Blue lines mean the road is closed from 11:30 a.m. until about 3 p.m.

The annual 4th of July parade will begin at 7th Street and Constitution Avenue and end at 17th Street and Constitution Avenue.

Rolling street closures will also impact the Eastern Market and Capitol Hill neighborhoods between 10 a.m. and noon for the Capitol Hill July 4th Parade. That event will form start at 8th and I streets SE and end at 7th and D streets SE.

The U.S. Park Police is also testing a new system to bring important information to visitors to NPS property in the District. To receive emergency alerts, advisories and event information, you can text "July4DC" to 888777.
