A teacher at a Woodbridge middle school was arrested Wednesday on charges he assaulted a student, police say.
The teacher, 61-year-old Curtis Smith, was charged with after a 13-year-old accused him of assaulting him in class at Fred Lynn Middle School the previous day.
It is unclear what started the altercation between Smith and the student, but police say that the teacher hit the boy on the arm with his hand. The student suffered minor injuries.
Smith, who has taught technology courses at Fred Lynn since 2002, was charged with assault and battery and released on a court summons. A Prince William County Schools spokesperson said that the allegations are being investigated by police.
As the investigation continues, though, parents at the school are saying that there's no place at all in the classroom for teachers to be acting this way.
"There's no teacher that should be putting their hand on a student," Kenyetta Sledge, whose child goes to the school, said.
