Crews clean up vacant Upper Marlboro home

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WJLA) - Residents of this Upper Marlboro neighborhood are thrilled. They can finally see the grass in front of an abandoned townhouse, where a mess had them fuming for days.

"It's been removed. It's all gone," said area homeowner Kendrick Savage.

"Whoa! Great job, great job," added Demetrio Sams.

On Sunday night, our cameras captured a huge pile of trash and belongings – furniture, clothes, even an old piano – littering this yard. Neighbors say that ten days ago, someone pulled this mess out of a foreclosed property, but never cleaned it up.

Less than a day later, the view from Old Colony Drive is now much more pleasant.

"Man, I'm so happy, thanks to Channel 7! Thanks to 7 On Your Side," said Demetrio Sams.

Only hours after our story aired, a crew from P.G. County responded by completely removing this eyesore.

Getting rid of a mess of this magnitude typically takes time, but this case was so disconcerting that officials from the Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement expedited the process.

"We want to thank the county for a prompt response also," added Sams.

Neighbors say the cleanup is somewhat of a "Christmas miracle" as it's happening just in time for friends and family who will be arriving for the holiday. This community can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"7 On Your Side has given us a gift, an early Christmas gift and we appreciate it," said Kendrick Savage.

"Well that's beautiful -- and just in time for Christmas," added Valerie Robinson.
