Bay Bridge crash sends car into bay

A three-car crash sent one vehicle over the Bay Bridge Friday evening.

Police say a tractor trailer and SUV struck a sedan around 8:25 p.m., sending it over the wall. The vehicle fell nearly 40 feet into the bay below.

The driver of the sedan, a 22-year-old woman, was able to get out and swim to a jetty. A nearby boater saw the crash happen and sat with the woman until help arrived. She was taken to Shock Trauma with critical but non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes about a quarter of a mile past the toll booth on the Anne Arundel County side.

Crews will work to pull the vehicle from the shallow water Saturday.
