Police have charged a well-known local boxer, Larry Recio, aka The Cuban Assassin, with the 2009 murder near FedEx Field of Shai Caldwell, a 19-year-old mother.

ABC7 was were there at the crime scene not long after midnight, June 2, 2009.

When police arrived on the scene of what had been a high-school graduation party, they found scattered red cups and four victims. Three of them survived the shooting. Shai Caldwell did not.

The next morning ABC7’s Brad Bell spoke with Caldwell’s mother, Sylvia, as she held a picture of her daughter and 15-month-old granddaughter.

At the time police thought the shooting was related to a dispute that didn’t involve Caldwell. Her mother heard rumors.

But the case went cold until recently when witnesses led police to crucial evidence linking Recio to the crime. Recio has a long criminal history and was himself shot and badly wounded two years ago.

Now he’s behind bars on a federal gun charge and facing a new charge of first-degree murder.

Detectives say they never gave up on solving the case.

“Hey, if you think you’re gonna get away with something, think again because we are on the case,” says Cpl. Lamar Robinson of the Prince George’s County Police.

Shai Caldwell’s mother spoke with Brad Bell by phone, saying she is thrilled her daughter’s alleged killer is facing justice.
