Classmates raise money to help 8-year-old girl shot in D.C.

Classmates of an eight-year-old girl, who was critically wounded by a stray bullet last week in the District, took part in a fundraiser Saturday morning to help pay her bills.

Makayla Darden's classmates helped raise money on the campus of Imagine Southeast Public Charter School.

Hours later, a vigil was held for the young girl.

Makayla is still in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound that pierced one of her lungs.

Last week, Karie Brown, 19, and Demtrius Nathaniel Patten, 21, both of Southeast Washington, were arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill.
