POTOMAC, Md. (WJLA) - A 7-year-old is in critical condition after she was possibly struck as her mother backed out of the family's driveway Sunday night.
Investigators returned Monday to Potomac, trying to determine what exactly happened when a woman in a Mercedes SUV apparently struck and critically injured her young daughter the night prior.
Sahar Itani, who lives nearby with four children of her own, aches for the little girl's mother.
"I really feel for the mom," she said. "In my mind, I can't imagine what kind of emotions she is going through."
Police say the child, Xitong Kong, suffered life-threatening injuries and remains at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
They also confirm that on Sunday evening, 41-year-old Wenhua Song pulled out of her driveway to head to the grocery store. She returned 20 minutes later to discover the horrifying news - her 7-year-old daughter had been critically injured.
Authorities say it's possible the mother thought her younest child was inside the home with her 16-year-old sister, while the 16-year-old thought her younger sibling was with their mother.
Police also say it's possible that the little girl went out to the car to go with her mother, who tells police she didn't realize she had hit something.
"I know this girl so well -- she's such a pretty girl," said neighbor Mona Bhatia.
Police say the Mercedes was equipped with a rear-view camera but add that Song may have recently disabled it.
"She has to live with this memory for the rest of her life," Bhatia said.
The incident occurred in the 9900 block of Potomac Manors Drive in Potomac.
