A 3-year-old killed in a car accident in Hanover on Thursday was not wearing a seat belt or in a child safety seat, police say.
Authorities say that five other passengers in the car, all teens, sustained severe injuries when their vehicle ran off the road, and police say that speed and reckless driving were factors in the crash.
An investigation revealed that the car, a 1995 Plymouth Acclaim with six people inside, was traveling south on Ridge Road when it lost control and struck a large tree. The 3-year-old was sitting on the lap of one of the passengers in the center, rear seat.
The child was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The five others were taken to the University of Maryland Hospital Shock Trauma unit.
The child was identified as Joseph Eugene Sutherlin, 3, of Frederick Road, Baltimore.
