WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) - A man being held in West Virginia and sought for questioning in a series of killings in Alexandria, Va., is fighting extradition.
The Intelligencer and Wheeling News Register says public defender Shayne Welling has asked a judge in Wheeling to give him more time to submit his objections to Charles Severance's extradition.
Welling has seven days to prepare his challenge, then the prosecution has seven days to respond.
Police in Alexandria have said they want to talk to Severance about three unsolved killings. Severance has not been charged in the slayings.
Investigators said last month that ballistics evidence showed possible connections to three killings - one in February, one late last year and one in 2003.
Severance was arrested in Wheeling on an unrelated firearms charge in northern Virginia.
