Charles County officer saves five from house fire

A Charles County Sheriff’s officer is being hailed as a hero after he saved a family of five from a house fire.

William Jackson responded to a townhouse fire in the 11800 block of Oak Manor Drive in Waldorf at about 3:30 a.m. on July 5. The caller, an occupant of the house, said he saw smoke and flames coming from the kitchen and said he was trapped in a bedroom.

Jackson kicked the door of the house open and yelled for the residents to come out. But no one answered. With heavy smoke filling the house, Jackson went into the house, up the stairs and removed five occupants from the house – including three adults and two teens aged 13 and 17.

Firefighters responded and extinguished the blaze, which was mostly in the kitchen. Authorities haven’t determined what caused the fire.
