Driver of SUV slams into apartment, runs away; 20 residents evacuated in Southeast D.C.

The driver of an SUV slammed into an apartment building and exited the car after the incident, forcing an evacuation of 20 residents early Wednesday morning in Southeast Washington.

A man and pregnant woman were inside the apartment at the time of the accident. Police say the woman was taken to an area hospital as a precaution, while the man was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

According to police, the SUV was traveling down 51st Street, SE when it turned on to D Street and hit a Ford Explorer before plowing into the building.

Witnesses told ABC7 News the driver was wearing a mask and exited the SUV following the crash. The accident happened in the 5000 block of D Street, SE.

Authorities say the driver is currently on the run.

Road closures were in effect in the 5000 block of D Street, SE due to police activity.
