(WJLA) - Capital Bikeshare will be up, running and serving College Park and the University of Maryland early next year, the Washington Post reports.
Just weeks after rolling out its bike sharing service in Montgomery County and Maryland for the first time, the company announced over the weekend that it would install 10 stations throughout College Park by Feb. 1, marking its first foray into Prince George's County.
Six of those stations will be located on the University of Maryland's campus, with another placed at the city's Metro station.
City officials tell the Post that they hope for the system to eventually expand throughout Route 1 and the surrounding area, including Hyattsville, Riverdale Park and other surrounding towns.
The Diamondback reports that previous efforts to expand Capital Bikeshare to College Park and the campus were hampered earlier this year due to cost increases. The Post pegs the annual cost of maintaining all 10 stations at more than $160,000.
In late September, Maryland received its first Bikeshare docks. The popular bike sharing service will eventually have 51 stations and hundreds of bikes throughout Montgomery County.
