The man who police say helped the suspect in the July 8 murder of Tranice Richardson evade police custody has been arrested and charged with obstruction of justice.

Frederick Police charged Brandon McCallister with obstruction and hindering, accessory and making false statements in connection with his 20-day effort to allegedly help Melvin Smith stay out of custody.

Detectives say that during the course of the investigation, McCallister and Smith communicated regularly following Richardson's murder and had arranged for transportation and a place for Smith to stay in Pittsburgh.

Police had several conversations with McCallister, during which he was made aware that authorities had a warrant for Smith's arrest.

Smith is the suspect in the murder of 33-year-old Richardson, the mother of his child.
