Bao Bao makes public debut for FONZ members

WASHINGTON (WJLA) - Members of the National Zoo cheered as the nearly five-month-old Bao Bao was brought out for her public debut Saturday.

"That is the most adorable thing that I have ever seen," squealed 10-year-old, Elizabeth Harsanje.

Roughly 40,000 households hold Friends of the National Zoo, or FONZ, memberships. The zoo invited all of them to view the panda cub exclusively this week. Before Saturday, Bao Bao could only been seen on the zoo's panda cam.

"She's so beautiful," marveled Karen Wille . "We've waited 8 years to have another baby panda here."

Born weighing under five ounces, Bao Bao now weighs nearly 20 pounds.

The National Zoo is expecting tens of thousands of members to visit the panda cub this week. The exhibit will be open to the public on Jan. 18.
