Baltimore pre-k suspensions on the rise
Out-of-school suspensions for three and four-year-old students in Baltimore public schools doubled last year, according to data provided by the city to The Baltimore Sun.
The city suspended 33 pre-kindergarten students during the last school year, twice as many as in the year previous. Anne Arundel County said is had handed out 19 such punishments last year, while Howard County said it would not suspend a student so young as a matter of policy.
Statewide, 91 Maryland pre-k students were suspended or expelled during the 2011-2012 school year, the most recent period with available data. That number was down the 105 such punishments in Maryland in 2010 but still higher than the 75 suspensions or expulsions in 2009.
