BALTIMORE (AP) - A Maryland corrections official says a man was shot while trying to escape a Baltimore jail.
Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman Mark Vernarelli says the man had been arrested by city police and was being brought Monday morning to the Central Booking and Intake Center. The spokesman says the man fled while being removed from a police vehicle and was shot by a corrections officer as he tried to scale a fence.
The unidentified man was wounded in the leg but did make it over the fence. He was taken back into custody a short distance away.
The corrections spokesman did not identify the officer other than to say he is a 12-year veteran. Vernarelli says the incident is being investigated by the department's internal investigative unit.
