(WJLA) - No doubt your cupboards are piling up with boxes of Thin Mints and Shortbreads and Samoas. Tommy McFly went into the kitchen with a gourmet chef and local Girl Scout troop to bring you a creative concoction and the real mission for Girl Scout cookie sales.
Chef Michelle Poteaux of Bastille in Old Town, Alexandria wows customers every night with culinary creations – but can she work Samoas into a dessert to dazzle Troop 3966 from Old Town?
“We’re doing a Samoa chocolate caramel tart with a coconut macaroon crust,” she says. It includes a cup-and-a-half of unsweetened desiccated coconut, a quarter-cup of sugar, two egg whites, and vanilla extract.
According to the chef, it's ready to spread into pans when the concoction holds its shape, then goes for roughly 25 minutes in the oven until golden brown.
“You just need good quality chocolate and good butter and fresh eggs," says Chef Michelle.
Qualities for later in life is what cookie sales teaches these young business women.
“They learn how to talk to people in an appropriate manner, how to make change, make transactions,” explains Troop 3966 leader Reba Winstead.
Selling Girl Scout cookies is all about giving the girls confidence, teaching them money management skills, leadership skills, and planning skills.
