Chicken Fight: Backyard chicken owners fight city hall to keep their 'pets' in D.C.
WASHINGTON (ABC7) —
Several chicken owners in DC say the city is unfairly targeting them. The Health Deprtment says chickens have been illegal within the city limits for three decades.
Families with chicken coops in their backyards received notices that they had to remove the flocks within 48 hours in April.
But they fought and won a reprieve based on the vagueness of the law.
So now Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to enact legislation to clarify which animals are deemed not domestic.
The chicken owners say their flocks enhance the urban experience and cause no problems.
One family has launched a website and an on-line petition to urge the city to allow them to keep their flocks: dcbackyardchickens.org
The city council will hold a hearing on the issue on May 5.
