ARLINGTON, Va. (AP/WJLA) - Fire officials say a woman gave birth to a baby girl in a car along eastbound Interstate 66 in Arlington.

Arlington County Fire Department Capt. Bill Shelton says crews were called to the highway around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 21.

The baby was born before medics arrived.

Medics treated the mother, Rebecca Cowen, and baby, Grace Lucia, and took them to Virginia Hospital Center, where they were joined by Cowen’s husband, John, and son, Caleb.

“We are overjoyed to welcome Grace Lucia Cowen into this world, and love her overzealous eagerness to start her beautiful life,” Rebecca Cowen said. “It was an amazing and miraculous moment to birth my own baby, even if it was on the side of 66.”

Both Rebecca and Grace Cowen are in good health.
