WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A man entered a Petworth apartment building that residents thought was secure Sunday night, broke into an apartment, raped a woman, and then robbed her.

Residents tell ABC7 they have to use a security fob to enter the building and to use the elevator in the building in the 3900 block of Georgia Avenue NW.

Police say they are trying to determine if the attacker knew someone in the building, had access to a key fob, or if someone let him in.

After he gained access into the building around 8 p.m., police say he forced his way into the woman’s apartment, raped her and then stole some of her belongings before walking out.

A resident gave ABC7 a copy of a notice that was sent to everyone in the building warning residents to never allow strangers in the building, but there was no mention that a resident had been raped and robbed.

Police released a surveillance photo of a “person of interest” described as a black male, 5'6 to 5'7 in height, light complexion, beard, black hair.
