The Anne Arundel County police officer who placed a camera in a high school bathroom told investigators he did it to deter students from smoking, The Capital Gazette reports.
The officer will not face criminal charges. According to police, the device "was not used to record store, or transmit any images or sound."
The Capital Gazette identifies the officer as Allen Marcus, Glen Burnie High School's former resource officer. He told investigators that students would often smoke marijuana and cigarettes in the bathroom.
Marcus has since returned to duty, but is not working at the school.
