Alexandria red light cameras bringing thousands of dollars to the city

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Red light cameras that have been installed at intersections in Alexandria are netting hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines in the past seven months.

Alexandria police officials tell WTOP Radio that nearly 9,400 tickets have been issued since August--at{ }$50 a ticket.

Last July, the cameras were installed at three intersections. They are Duke and Walker streets, Gibbon and South Patrick streets and Franklin and South Patrick streets. Tickets started going out in August.

Police say the number of tickets being generated by the automatic cameras is disturbing. They say the cameras are meant to enhance safety.
