ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WJLA) -- Emotions spilled over outside the Seasons Condominium complex in Alexandria after police say a 40-year-old was shot and killed in a stairwell around 5:30 p.m. on Monday night.
Investigators searched in vain on the property for the suspect, who still remains on the loose.
"He didn't deserve what happened to him, and another good person is taken away for no good reason," says Candrice Lewis, who identified the victim as Bradley Bostick. "Nobody knows why."
Lewis says she had a child with Bostick, and that he was a wonderful father: "No matter what I needed, he was there for me."
She says Bostick was a beloved family man who shied away from confrontation. Therefore, she is at a loss as to why his life was taken.
Henry Mcentyre says he was one of Bostick's best friends.
"I come down the street and find that he's dead," he says. "That's a hard feeling."
And many who live in the area are having a hard time processing this level of violence. Alexandria police say they have had only a few homicides in 2013.
"Right now, speaking to you, I'm a little scared knowing something like this would happen so close to where I live," says neighbor James Brown. "I'm a little shaken right now at what's happening."
Police have not yet released a suspect description or motive.
