(WJLA) -Alexandria Police announced Thursday that new clues could link three unsolved murders in Del Ray. Over a 10-year period, Ruthanne Lodato, Ron Kirby, and Nancy Dunning have all been killed in their Alexandria homes. Now police say there are similarities between bullet fragments found at all three murder scenes.
"I just couldn't believe it," said Pam Beard. "You hear the cliche 'it doesn't happen in this neighborhood.' Well, it does."
Ten years ago, Beard arrived home to a massive crime scene. Her neighbor, Nancy Dunning, the wife of Alexandria's sheriff at the time, had been gunned down inside her home.
"It was really hard at first. I mean, I didn't sleep much and it just bothered me that whoever it was could come back," she said.
The possibility that one person could be responsible for all three killings has sparked confidence and defiance in Ron Kirby's neighborhood.
"You have to have confidence the police are doing their job. That is what we pay taxes for and that is why they go to work every day," said Tom Fulham.
"I wouldn't let anything change the way I live. I am not going to live in fear and I think anyone who does shouldn't," said Judy Miller.
But three murders within a two-mile radius and evidence that bullets may all be the same in the killings of three neighbors, who were all well-known within the community at the time of their deaths, hits too close to home for Beard.
"The motive is the thing that gets me," she said. "I mean, why?"
