ROCKVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - Former Baltimore city police officer Alec Eugene Taylor pled guilty Wednesday to a felony count of aggravated animal cruelty for beating and choking his girlfriend's puppy to death.

Taylor beat the dog, a 7-month-old Jack Russell Terrier named Rocko, with a mop until it broke and then strangled the dog. The 28-year-old former cop, upset that the dog had gone to the bathroom on the carpet of the couple's Silver Spring apartment, initially put the animal's body in a dumpster but later put it in a shoebox and buried it.

In a disturbing set of text messages, Taylor told his girlfriend about the beating and sent her a picture of the dog's body.

After pleading guilty, a judge told Taylor that he should expect jail time when he is sentenced Oct. 8. The maximum sentence Taylor could face is three years in jail and a $500 fine, although given the officer's clean record, he could be given as few as three months.

Taylor's attorney said that as a police officer, his client was under significant stress and added that the beating was out of character for him.
