911 line back up in DC after difficulty

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Metropolitan Police Department in Washington says the city's 911 emergency system is functioning again.

Spokesman Araz Alali says the system is back up, and residents can call 911 as usual. The system began experiencing difficulty sometime Saturday afternoon and residents were asked to call an alternate number instead of 911.

Alali said he did not know the exact time when the system went down or when it began functioning again.
