9-year-old Landover student beaten by classmates on school bus
LANDOVER, Md. (WJLA) -- The family of a 9-year-old girl wants to know why a Prince George's County public school bus driver didn't step in to stop a violent assault.
The incident was captured on cell phone video as a school bus pulled out of Highland Park Elementary in Landover. Though Saraia Collins pleads with the other children to leave her alone they continue to taunt her. Eventually the verbal attack becomes physical.
Saraia suffered a concussion but her mother says the emotional wounds are harder to heal. Today the family went to the school and the Prince George's County Police Department. The police deferred to the school system, which announced late today that the girl seen in the video inflicting the most severe blows has been suspended. Other students are being interviewed and may be suspended as well.
As far as the bus driver, he is under investigation by the transportation department. He may face punitive action.
Saraia is taking the week off to recover from her concussion. Her mother doesn't know where she will be sent to school next week. Saraia does not want to return to Highland Park.
