Time capsule discovered at Silver Spring fire station

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJLA) - Glenmont Station 18 has seen a lot of years, and has certainly saved a lot of lives and property.

"We definitely have come a long way baby!" said retired volunteer firefighter, Paul Harding, Jr.

"You walk in here, you see things broken up and everything," added retired firefighter Artie Hawkins.

That’s what happens when you’ve done six decades of service.

"Brings tears to my eyes, but everybody's got to move on," said Chief Jayme Heflin.

The Glenmont Station will soon have to make way for a widened road. But not before a wonderful discovery was made.

"I was three years old when it was put into this building," said Artie Hawkins.

The “it” he is referring to is this little box – a time capsule hidden behind the cornerstone.{ } Thus, this journey into the past.

Inside, it’s a kind of fire hall treasure trove, along with memories for 87-year-old Paul Harding, an original volunteer.

Young and old remember and honor a storied past. Who knew a little tin box could hold so much?
