500 illegal fireworks seized on July 4, Alexandria fire officials say
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - Alexandria fire officials say they seized about 500 illegal fireworks on Independence Day, and no injuries were reported.
The Alexandria fire marshals say they had an increased presence in the city on July 4 and in the days leading up to the holiday. All fireworks are illegal in the city, including those that are allowed in neighboring jurisdictions.
The city says many of the seized fireworks explode or shoot flaming projectiles that could cause fires or injuries.
Fire marshals responded to about 50 calls involving fireworks complaints in recent days. Officials say they also distributed information informing residents that fireworks are not allowed.
Possessing fireworks is a misdemeanor offense in Alexandria and carries a penalty of up to one year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine.
