U.S. Park Police responded to 11 crashes in a five-hour period on the Baltimore Washington Parkway early Tuesday morning, including two cars that crashed into trees leaving a man critically injured.

The 11 crashes happened between 2;20 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., police say.

Two of the crashes happened going north near Greenbelt Road.

The fifth reported crash involves at least one car that crashed into a tree. Only one lane was open in this area of Baltimore Washington Parkway.

Another crash was reported in the same area. It had been reported that it could involve a police cruiser but it was later confirmed to be a civilian car.

The third reported accident happened just before the earliest accident and has since been pulled from the road on the northbound side of Baltimore Washington Parkway near Route 197.

The second crash took place south of 197 and also on the north side. It has also since cleared.

The first of the crashes to be reported happened between 197 and Powder Mill Road going south where a car wrapped around a tree and left a man trapped for nearly half an hour.

The man was flown to shock trauma in critical condition.
